About

Hi, I’m Victoria

Welcome to Outdoor-Classrooms.com, where learning transcends walls and thrives in nature’s embrace. I’m Victoria, an educator deeply passionate about redefining our outdoor spaces into vibrant learning environments. My journey into outdoor classrooms began with a remarkable transformation. At my children’s elementary school, I helped lead our community in taking an old, desolate courtyard garden and turning it into a vibrant learning sanctuary, sparking a profound shift in my educational philosophy towards nature-based approaches. The pivotal moment was witnessing fifth graders—many of whom had never planted anything before—thrive as they engaged with this outdoor learning space. I saw students, who were often restless indoors, come alive and naturally step into leadership roles within the garden. This eye-opening experience was the catalyst that inspired my dedication to cultivating outdoor classrooms and nature-based curriculum.

With a career in education spanning 40 years, I’ve taught in early childhood settings, senior centers, community colleges, and multigenerational programs. Beginning as an early childhood teacher in Bethesda, Maryland, I’ve dedicated my career to exploring how children learn through play—a theme woven throughout my professional journey and into my outdoor teaching gardens.

Central to my success is an unwavering commitment to equipping educators with the resources needed to transform outdoor spaces into enriching learning environments for children. Through engaging online and in-person training, coaching via the Outdoor Classroom Teacher Certification Program, and teaching at the Secret Gardens Outdoor Classroom, I share practical techniques and insights. Additionally, I facilitate the vibrant international CIRCLE Membership community, fostering a global exchange of innovative ideas. My frameworks—anchored in the 5 Phases of Teaching Outdoors and the 4 Types of Teaching Gardens—empower educators worldwide to cultivate curiosity and foster meaningful connections.

As the host of the Outdoor Classrooms Podcast, I share innovative ideas and transformative outdoor classroom stories from our dynamic guests, broadcasting inspiration to educators around the globe. This platform allows me to connect and engage with a worldwide community eager to explore the possibilities of outdoor education.

As a popular keynote speaker and conference presenter, I engage audiences with a style that is practical, inclusive, and intimately connected to the realities of outdoor teaching. Whether in my hometown of Beverly, MA, or speaking to educators globally, my aim is to inspire and support every child having access to an outdoor classroom.

Join me as we explore the boundless potential of outdoor classrooms and enrich education with nature as our partner in learning.

Warm regards,

Victoria Hackett, M.Ed.
